History of Benda
1964 Benda Kogyo founded at 11-1 Hondori, Kure-shi, Hiroshima. Chairman: Kazuyoshi Yashiro, President and Executive Director: Yasuhiro Yashiro. Plant opened at 13053-3 Menda, Hiroshiraishi, Kure-shi (currently Osedo Ironworks).
Company name comes from the bending processing for steel, such as H-steels, square steels, and pipes.

1965 Built new business office for Hiro Plant at 5-13053-3 Hiroshiratake, Kure-shi.  
1966 Started delivery of bent pipe products for cement mixer trucks to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Shimonoseki. Around this time, began licensing bending processing technology to other companies. history02
1969 Built Tokuyama Plant at 1247-1 Wada, Suetakeshimo, Kudamatsu-shi. President Yasuhiro Yashiro also served as works manager.  
1972 Built a new Benda Kogyo Head Plant and Kawajiri Plant. Relocated to current address.
Started production of concrete piles. Manufacturing method for PC pile rings developed by Benda Kogyo earned a good reputation in the concrete pile industry, leading to increased supply to major pile manufacturers.
Applied for patent for “method and apparatus for manufacturing metal ring material”.
 
1973 Delivered bent H-steels for use in dam sluice gates to IHI Corporation.
Granted patent for “method of cold-bending H-steels”.

1974 First delivery of ring blanks to Jidosha Buhin Kogyo (Drawing Nos. 032 and 036). As a result, orders for ring blanks surged.
Granted patent for “method of bending steel pipes at small radius by cold processing”.
Built Benda Kogyo Kawajiri Plant No. 2 (currently company housing for single employees).

1975 Entered automotive industry with patents granted in 9 countries for “method and apparatus for manufacturing metal ring material”.
Sold the Tokuyama Plant to Tokuyama Kikai (currently Tokki Co., Ltd.), along with licensing of technology for general processing methods.
 
1976 Installed a continuous combustion furnace at Benda Kogyo. This allowed heat treatment to be performed in house, leading to the start of the full scale production of ring blanks. At the same time, started licensing the technology for the manufacturing process for ring blanks to other companies.
Delivered bent steel products for use in dam sluice gates to the Yokohama Shipyard for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

1979 Established the “Benda Method”.  
1984 Built Nigata Plant at 1511-2 Nigatasambashidori, Kure-shi, Hiroshima.  
1985 Established Kanto Benda Kogyo Co., Ltd. at 1723 Shimotsuboyama, Minamikawachimachi, Kawachi-gun, Tochigi. Yasuhiro Yashiro took on the post of President and Representative Director, and Yukio Yashiro the post of Works Manager.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
 
1986 Established Benda Sunkwang Industrial Co., Ltd. in Incheon, South Korea.  
1987 Han Kwang Seok took on the post of Representative Director of Benda Sunkwang.
Delivered 200,000 ring blanks for car air conditioning units to Ogura Clutch Co., Ltd.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Taiyo Machinery. Co., Ltd.

1988 Increased capital to 58.5 million yen.
Established Korea Steel Industries Co., Ltd.
Built Benda Kogyo Kawajiri Plant No. 3.
 
1990 Established the joint venture Jibuhin Thailand Co., Ltd. in Chonburi Province, Thailand. history07
1992 Introduced assurance technology for welded areas through production for hub support.  
1993 Built Benda Kogyo Plant No. 4. (currently Asia Trading Co., Ltd.)
Ended production for hub support.

1994 Installed a cold-rolling machine, to achieve an integrated production system for ring products.  
1995 Established Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts Co., Ltd. in Qingdao, China.
Established Benda Amtek Co., Ltd. through joint investment with Amtek Auto Limited in Delhi, India.

1996 Built a drive plate assembly line at Benda Sunkwang. Started supplying parts to Daewoo Motor.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Mazda Buhin Kogyo (currently Ring Techs Co., Ltd).
Established Asia Trading Co., Ltd. (previously Benda Shoji) to separate domestic business and trading.

1997 Benda Kogyo started doing business with NHK Sales Co., Ltd. and Yorozu Corporation.
Kazuyoshi Yashiro passed away.
 
1998 Maizuru Co., Ltd., Benda Kogyo’s primary external supplier of rolled material, went out of business. Transitioned to an integrated production system to increase the ratio of cold-rolling produced in house.  
1999 Started mass production of flywheel assemblies for Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi Motors Engine Manufacturing, to do business in the Chinese market via Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts.  
2000 Benda Sunkwang started supplying drive plate assemblies to GM Holden Ltd.
Benda Sunkwang acquired all shares in Korea Steel Industries.
Benda Sunkwang acquired QS 9000, required in order to do business with the Big Three auto companies in the U.S.

2002 Benda Sunkwang expanded to the Namdong Industrial Complex in Incheon.
Benda Kogyo Tokyo Business Office opened in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Acquired ISO 9001 certification from the JQA certification body.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Kubota Corporation, Kokusan Denki Co., Ltd., Kitagawa Iron Works Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., and Kiriu Corporation.

2003 Benda Sunkwang started providing 1 pc flexplate technology together with Magna Powertrain.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Fuji Kiko Co., Ltd.
 
2004 Won the Outstanding Performance Award for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “IT Management Top 100” Promotion Program.
Acquired ISO 14001 certification from the JQA certification body.
Benda Sunkwang expanded to plant No. 3. Built a 1 pc flexplate line.
 
2005 Selected as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “FY 2005 Model Business for IT-Utilizing Management Reform”.
Established the Benda R&D Center in Benda Sunkwang.
Started supplying 1 pc products to Hyundai Motor from Benda Sunkwang.
 
2006 Won the First Place Award for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “IT Management Top 100” Promotion Program.
Benda Kogyo’s new rolling plant was awarded the “Aesthetic Townscape Prize, Building Section” from Kure City.
Established Yancheng Benda Gear Co., Ltd. as the 2nd base in China.

2007 Benda Kogyo Kurose Business Office completed in the Prefectural Kurose Industrial Complex in Higashihiroshima City.

2008 Participated in the “9th India Auto Expo 2008” at Asia’s largest automotive show in New Delhi, India.
Yancheng Benda started suppling ring gears to Fuji Kiko. Acquired ISO/TS 16949 certification from UL in March.
Senior Director Kazunari Yashiro took on the post of President and Executive Director. Yasuhiro Yashiro took on the post of Chairman and Executive Director.
Yancheng Benda started suppling ring gears to Kubota.
In South Korea, Benda Sunkwang began mass-production supply of drive plate assemblies to Chrysler. Benda Sunkwang received a Chrysler Excellent Supplier Award.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Sohshin Co., Ltd. via Taiyo Shoji Co., Ltd.

2009 Participated in a workshop on new technologies and methods organized by Toyota Motor Corporation. This experience engendered our high-yield expansion and spinning methods.
Won the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Outstanding Performance Award in “Small and Medium Business IT Management Awards 2009” and “IT Coordinators Association President’s Award”.
Won the “Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award” in the “Manufacturing Japan Awards” organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
In their first appearance in the 49th Kure Chamber of Commerce and Industry Softball Tournament, the Benda Kogyo Softball Team won 1st place.
Started supplying flywheel assemblies to SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile via Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts.
Benda Kogyo exhibited a booth at the “Monozukuri Business Meeting @ Shanghai” held in Shanghai.
 
2010 Selected for FY 2009 Monozukuri Small and Medium Enterprise Product Development Grant Project, for the development of equipment and technologies for small- and large-diameter rings.
Established Kurose Plant No. 2.
Benda Kogyo began doing business with Honda Trading Corporation and Exedy Corporation.

Chairman Yasuhiro Yashiro passed away suddenly in China.
Developed a hot-rolling machine, and installed it in Kurose Plant No. 2.
Yancheng Benda started suppling ring gears to Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.

2012 Korea Steel Industries built hot- and cold-rolling lines at Asan Plant.
Started mass production of large-diameter rings through the utilization of equipment and technologies for large-diameter rings.
President Kazunari Yashiro participated in the 3rd panel discussion “Small and Medium Enterprises Trying to Establish New Markets Overseas” at the 4th JFC Symposium “Overseas Expansion by Small and Medium Enterprises: Global Strategy for Growing in Conjunction with Domestic Business”.
Production volume exceeded 5 million units annually at Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts Co., Ltd.
Benda Sunkwang selected by Fiat Chrysler for Perfect Quality Award.
Benda Kogyo started doing business with Guangzhou JoFu Miyama Autoparts Co., Ltd.

2014 Benda Kogyo started doing business with Hino Motors, Ltd. via Toyota Tsusho Corporation.
Opening ceremony held in February for Thailand plant at Benda Thailand. First shipment ceremony held in August.
Transitioned to a consolidated accounting system. Accounting audit implemented in accordance with the change in accounting standards from tax accounting standards to corporate accounting standards.
Started the “One Benda Project” as the 1st medium-term business plan.
Selected for the FY 2013 Small and Medium Enterprise/Small Business Monozukuri/Commercial/Service Innovation Project, and received a grant.
Won 1st place in the 54th Kure Chamber of Commerce and Industry Softball Tournament.
Held ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company.
Benda Kogyo received a letter of appreciation from Yanmar Co., Ltd. for prompt service in the delivery of production transfer parts.

2015 The Benda Kogyo 50th Anniversary Calendar, designed in commemoration of the company’s history, won both the National Federation of Small Business Associations Chairman’s Award and the Silver Award, Calendar Division at the 66th All Japan Calendar Competition.
Benda Kogyo selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry/Small and Medium Enterprise Agency “Small Businesses Top 300”.
Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts Co., Ltd. commemorated the 20th anniversary of the founding of the company.
Acquired a new plant construction site in the Kurose Industrial Complex where the Kurose Business Office is located. The plant is scheduled to be completed in August 2016.
Benda Sunkwang selected as a leading global company by KICOX (Korea Industrial Complex Corp.).

2016 General manager position at Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts Co., Ltd. switched from General Manager Shin to General Manager Yashiro (Taira). During her 5-year term, General Manager Shin worked to stabilize management at the company. Following the 20th anniversary of the founding of Qingdao Benda Automobile Parts Co., Ltd. commemorated last October, she will be returning to Benda Kogyo.
Benda Sunkwang Industrial Co., Ltd. commemorated the 30th anniversary of the founding of the company.
